The planets Mercury and Venus, whenever they are seen, can never be far from the Sun in the sky. Mercury can be no more than 28 degrees from the Sun and Venus 47 degrees at most. Because their orbits are nearer the Sun than Earth's, we see them with phases similar to the Moon's. Here we see Mercury and Venus following the setting Sun in the western sky.
